New Year

How joyous
A once full and still living room
Even and ever after
Every spirit finds
A new year
A glimmer of light in the untimed morning
Any lingering scent of ha-ha-ha
Whose careless grasp we lost
A dim and soft-spoken whisper
Only to run circles
Round and round
Through and through
Our resolution faces.

it's early morning
it's not quite springtime
he's out walking
the streets are empty
of joggers and dogwalkers
no commuters save the squirrels starting the early shift
he sees a puddle
fresh frozen over
black surface smooth like glass
he walks beside it
looks at the surface
the streets are quiet
the streets are too quiet
he brushes foot across across that mirrored surface
then puts his foot down
tension push through the ice
he looks around
there's no one looking
he leans into it 'til there's a satisfying crack
he's puddlecrunching
there's no one around to see him smile
the water is seeping
and he keeps stepping
the ice is breaking
the sun is just rising
it's not quite melting
he don't want springtime
he's puddlecrunching
(J. Strutt , circa mid-2000's)
